What is light?
How do you see objects?
Click on the Georgia Science textbook to the right. If you do not remember the password, see your teacher.
Read (p. 160-161) about what light is, how light travels and how it can be blocked. Then answer questions provided by your teacher.
Now that you have background knowledge about light and how you are able to see objects around you, try to find a way of making shadows bigger in the shadow game (on the left) and then watch the video (on the right) about how you can have fun blocking light.

On a sheet of notebook paper, and using complete sentences, answer the following questions based on the game and video above:
Can you tell what kinds of objects block light?
You are now ready to learn about how some objects allow all light to pass through, how some objects allow some light to pass through, and how some objects block and reflect light. Follow the link back to your textbook and read (p. 162-163) about transparent, translucent, and opaque objects.
You are ready to begin making your Light Portfolio. You will need:
- 1 manila folder - Vocabulary flash cards for the following words:
- 1 ruler - light - shadow
- 1 opaque square - energy - translucent
- 1 translucent square - opaque - transparent
- 1 transparent square
- tape
Get a manila folder from your teacher. Cut three, 2 inch squares into the front of the folder. Open the folder and on the inside, tape the three, 3 inch squares to the inside of your folder. Be sure to choose a transparent square, translucent square, and an opaque square. Finally, make 6 vocabulary flash cards to match the words above. Tape these cards to the inside of your Light Portfolio, beneath your rectangular "windows."
You are now ready to continue your journey of discovering how light from the sun got separated into many different colors. Move on to the next step in the process. Can you tell how light is reflected?
